Planit Opticians Summer Series

In September 2023, during one of our Club meetings, three members—John Bannister, Alan Mudd, and Tony Holmes, all talented Clubman riders—proposed organising a series of Beginners and Novice Trials to take place on Wednesday evenings during the summer months. Their vision included three thoughtfully designed courses: an easy course tailored for raw beginners, a slightly more challenging middle course, and a harder course for those seeking an extra test of skill. The primary focus was on fun and enjoyment.

The plan was to host six rounds with no points or champions—just a series of relaxed, enjoyable trials. Alan and Tony generously offered to donate a rear tyre as a prize after each round. Riders would place their competitor number into a draw, and one lucky winner would take home the tyre.

Before the series began, John secured a sponsor: Phil Howlett, a former Club member and occasional competitor, and owner of Planit Opticians in Colne, Lancashire. Phil kindly offered a free eye test as an additional prize, to be awarded via a draw that also included observers’ names.

The series was a great success, thanks to everyone’s participation and support. Over the six rounds, we had an outstanding turnout of 22 observers. A heartfelt thank-you to each one of you for your time and dedication! Congratulations to Andrew Walters, who won the £100 draw, Gary Rushton, who took home the Bluetooth speaker, and Darren Mitchell, who received a Jitsue paddock coat.

Special prizes were also awarded, including two pairs of sunglasses from Planit Opticians, presented to Robert Ainley and Chris Mitchell by Phil Howlett. Jamie Waddington won the riding kit generously provided by Alfie Lampkin, while the draw for the rear tire went to Jamie Burrill. The free eye tests were awarded to Peter. Hollingworth and James Alexander, and William Bradley won the second Bluetooth speaker.

A huge thank-you goes to Alan Mudd and Tony Holmes for donating the tires awarded at each round, as well as to our Club photographer, Brian Ayrton, who presented the three course markers with framed action shots of them in action.

The Club extends its sincere gratitude to all the riders who supported the series, the organizers—John Bannister, Tony Holmes, and Alan Mudd—and our sponsor, Phil Howlett, for making this series such a memorable event.

We warmly invite you to join us again in 2025 for more fun, camaraderie, and great riding!
